Science-based cities (SBC) of Russia accumulate impressive intellectual
potential. Half of them ( about 20 towns) are located in Moscow region. Most of the cities have similar history, they were founded
in mid 40s in place of small settlments.
Common feature of all SBC is their major
social and economic activity targeted at maintaning high level of military science, fundamental physics, biology etc.
Despite many common features, economic difference between the cities grew substantially since 1991.
Starting 1991 Russian science suffered from sharp cut-off of financing, more substabtial than in any other
branch of economy.
Transformation of economic infrastructure is the most dynamic process in SBC today.
The ultimate goal is in converting the state budget organizations into market economy enterprises.
It's anticipated that the great potential in technological development will be helpful in transition to
market economy.
Today every SBC tries to find its own way to free market economy, and its own place
in the world science.
